SAN DIEGO – Three people were injured, two of the seriously, in a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 at the Interstate 8 junction Thursday, a late-morning collision that shut down lanes on the busy freeway for nearly four hours and snarled southbound traffic well into the evening commute.
By the time all lanes reopened, traffic had backed up about 10 miles, stretching north to where Interstate 805 splits from I-5.
The crash was reported just after 11:30 AM, according to California Highway Patrol. At least three vehicles were involved.
Initially the entire southbound side of the freeway was shut down, then authorities opened all but two lanes.
The entire roadway did not reopen until about 3:15 PM.
