3 injured when college police vehicle smashes into market

SAN DIEGO – A traffic accident involving a college law enforcement vehicle that ended up crashing into a Barrio Logan storefront left a pedestrian badly injured Wednesday and two others, including a pregnant woman and a campus police officer, less seriously hurt, authorities reported.

The crash in the 1000 block of Cesar E. Chavez Parkway occurred shortly after 9 a.m., when the officer swerved to avoid a vehicle whose driver ran a red light and lost control of his cruiser, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The law enforcement SUV veered onto a sidewalk, struck a person and then crashed to a halt into a building, SDPD public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.

Medics took the pedestrian to a trauma center for treatment of a severe leg injury and transported the San Diego Community College officer and a woman who had been riding in the other vehicle to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries and evaluation of complaints of pain, Hernandez said.
