Solo Crash Knocks Out Power in Poway

An estimated 950 San Diego Gas & Electric customers lost power after a car struck a power pole about 9:10 AM Thursday at Espola and Valle Verde roads in Poway, according to authorities.

A Chevrolet Cruz was traveling westbound on Espola Road when it veered off the roadway and collided with the pole, said San Diego Sheriff’s Department Sgt. David Toner. Deputy Fire Chief Jon Canavan said the vehicle’s occupant was not injured, although Toner said the driver had unspecified minor injuries. Canavan said the crash resulted in an exposed wire starting a small fire, which was put out by a bystander using a dry chemical extinguisher.

As of noon, SDG&E was estimating 52 remaining customers would have power restored by 2 PM.
