At least one killed in multi-vehicle crash on I-8 bridge near Pine Valley

PINE VALLEY – At least one person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 8 just west of Pine Valley, authorities said.

The collision was reported shortly before 5:15 a.m. on westbound Interstate 8 at the bridge over Pine Valley Creek when a pickup truck struck the side of the bridge, leaving the occupants trapped, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.

A motorist in another vehicle stopped at the crash scene and got the occupants out of the pickup, according to the incident log. Then at least two other vehicles slammed into the pickup truck as it was disabled in the left lane of westbound I-8.

When CHP officers arrived, one driver was unaccounted for and a search began.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner was called to the scene at 6:45 a.m. after authorities located a body under the bridge, the CHP said.

No details about the victim were immediately available.

CHP officers, paramedics and tow trucks were dispatched to the scene, but no other information was immediately available.
