SAN YSIDRO – The U.S. General Services Administration have opened a pair of additional lanes on southbound Interstate 5 Wednesday as it continues to expand and modernize the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry.
The two lanes opened at 9 a.m., widening southbound I-5 to six lanes from south of the Camino De La Plaza Bridge to El Chaparral in Tijuana, Mexico. The lane opening marks the completion of the third phase of the GSA’s San Ysidro Land Port of Entry modernization project, which also includes the addition of nearly 40 inspection booths at the U.S.-Mexico Border.
“We realize that Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the summer travel season,” said Patricia Chang-Lynn, GSA’s public buildings service deputy regional commissioner. “As modernization and expansion of the San Ysidro LPOE continues, GSA is providing the traveling public additional vehicle lanes to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.”
Four more lanes are expected to open next month, bringing the total to 10 southbound lanes. Cross-border travelers are encouraged to pay attention to posted road signs, which announce changes to southbound traffic patterns flowing into Mexico.
